Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences (hereinafter referred to as “Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences”) is one of the largest comprehensive scientific research institutions under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It consists of seven research units, namely, the Light Institute, the Plasma Institute, the Solid Institute, the Intelligent Institute, the High Magnetic Field Center, the Nuclear Energy Safety Institute, and the Health Institute.

The research directions of the Institute include plasma physics, magnetic confinement fusion engineering, atmospheric optical remote sensing, laser and optoelectronics science and technology, high magnetic field science and technology, environmental science and engineering, advanced nuclear energy, biophysics, translational medicine, advanced diagnosis and treatment technology, materials science and engineering, artificial intelligence and robotics, smart agricultural technology, etc. And has made many important scientific research achievements.

As a large comprehensive scientific research base with strong scientific research strength, Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences is a national demonstration base for innovative talent training, a national demonstration base for international science and technology cooperation, and a national demonstration base for double and innovation. Two national major scientific facilities have been built and operated, namely, the full superconducting Tokamak nuclear fusion experimental facility and the steady-state high-magnetic field experimental facility, and the third major scientific facility is under construction, a comprehensive research facility for the key system of the main host of the fusion reactor. In addition, the atmospheric environment three-dimensional detection facilities, high-light magnetic integrated experimental facilities are being carried out pre-research work.

In order to implement the strategic deployment of the “first action” plan of the Leading Party Group of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, strengthen the collaborative innovation of science and education, and promote the sharing of science and education resources, Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences has, in accordance with the unified deployment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, since 2014, postgraduate education of Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences has been centralized in the University of Science and Technology of China. According to the centralized implementation plan, it was decided to establish the Science Island Branch of the Graduate School of the University of Science and Technology of China (hereinafter referred to as the “Science Island Branch”). The Science Island Branch, under the guidance of the University of Science and Technology of China, is fully responsible for the postgraduate education of the Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences.
